At the foot of Mount Pessina, in the valley between the mountain itself and the promontory of Fortunago, a never-ending stream springs out, which has been the main drinking water supply for the inhabitants of Fortunago and neighboring villages for centuries. Tradition traces the source back to the miracles of the patron saint of Fortunago: San Ponzo, who, according to popular belief, pushing his stick into the ground brought to life sources of water for the cattle he brought to pasture. The porosity of the sandstone that Mount Pessina is made of favors the infiltration of rainwater, creating large reserves of underground water that give life to the spring, which even during droughts supplies abundant water flows.
Until the 1950s, the period in which the municipal aqueduct that distributes these waters was built, the inhabitants of Fortunago and the nearby hamlets supplied themselves with water with buckets or barrels for drinking use and for watering livestock and washed their clothes in the nearby wash house.
The growing use of drinking water that has occurred over the years led to the need, in the 1990s, to find other sources, but in order to quench one's thirst with the waters of the source, a fountain was built directly connected to the source. On this occasion, the municipal administration created a veritable "water house" by combining the fresh natural waters of the spring with the possibility of stocking up on sparkling water. The location of the fountain in an accessible, green, cool and shaded area, the quality of the water and the possibility of choosing between still and sparkling water, is a bonus for many interested parties, starting with cyclists, who frequent it in all seasons.
